Excerpt from March 10, 2020 Communication from Sandhills Community College President John Dempsey to Students and Staff:
Dear Colleagues and Students,
I know that many of us and our families are deeply concerned about the challenges posed by the coronavirus. I want to assure you that Sandhills is taking all reasonable precautions to protect our college family from exposure. While we have no plans at this time to suspend classes or other campus activities, and while nearly all members of our college community are OUTSIDE the groups that are likely to be most affected by the virus, we are still taking precautions.
We have conducted training for our Physical Plant staff to increase the intensity of their cleaning efforts and have secured additional part-time assistance in campus antivirus cleaning. We have pre-ordered a wide range of cleaning products, both industrial strength and personal, and installed additional hand sanitizers at various campus locations.
Perhaps most important, we have decided to impose a 14-day quarantine on anyone who has traveled to an area that the CDC considers a virus “hot” zone. This quarantine will prohibit the traveler from coming to the campus for two weeks – the period of time needed to be sure the virus has not been contracted.
This will be relatively simple for those we know have visited virus hot spots – the state of Washington and selected foreign countries. The problem is that we do not monitor the personal travel of our faculty, staff, and students. Accordingly, we must rely on our honesty, common sense, and moral judgment to do the right thing and self-report if we have traveled to one of those areas.
